MAYER HAWTHORNE. THE NEW DOO WOP!

Who is Mayer Hawthorne?

Originally known as DJ Haircut, this 29-year-old white kid from Ann Arbor went from DJ to soul singer. What started out as a joke for the DJ caught the ear of Stones Throw Records, as well as BBC Radio 1 host Gilles Peterson and producer/DJ Mark Ronson. Expectations are high for the admitted vinyl junkie who never planned on taking his crooning public. Hawthorne’s hanging-by-a-string falsetto and breakbeat production on his first recorded effort, the tender “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out”

Hawthorne has produced and played instruments for much of his life, but never intended to become a singer. He isn’t formally trained, and never sang in the church choir or in any of the bands he was in. But here he is, new school soul sensation, who has taken the Motown assembly-line production model and eliminated nearly every element but himself and a few hired hands with no intended marketing plan.

IM LOVIN THE OLD SCHOOL SOUL.

THE REINVENTION OF THE REMIXX

Is it just me or does it seem like REmixes and covers are making a REturn to the BIG time??? I know that mixtapes and remixes have always been a big part of the hip-hop/rap culture, but it seems increasingly more prevalent in "white" music as well... For those of you whom may be fans of the REmix, here are a few that I have been digging on... Most of these REmixes can be found on an awesome site if you haven't heard of it entitled The Hype Machine. The Hype Machine is one of the best sites on the web to find the latest jams along with access to some of the best music blogs out there. THM is a search engine of sorts in that you can search for different artists and read the blogs associated with that artist. KILLER website.

Phoenix - Lisztomania (Classixx Remix)

Fever Ray - When I Grow Up (Dan Lissvik Remix)
Fever Ray - Triangle Walks (Rex The Dog Edit)

...Yes, I realize Kid Cudi is hip-hop/rap. Deal with it.

So what are your thoughts? Let me know what your favorite remixes are below...

STRANGE NEWS: 3 TOP STORIES

1. DUMPED MATTRESS LANDS CASH IN TRASH (ISRAEL)...ah..FML!!6/10- A stash of cash landed in the trash when a woman in Israel dumped her mother's mattress not knowing it was stuffed with the equivalent of about one million dollars.

Israeli media reported that the 40-year-old woman showed up at a garbage dump in a panic on Tuesday, looking for the valuable bedding.

She had bought a new mattress for her mother and, wanting the gift to be a surprise, threw away the old one. She then found out the decades-old mattress contained her mother's life savings.

Workers are helping her search the garbage, but have found no sign of the cash so far.

2. FAMILY PORTRAIT TURNS UP ON A CZECH BILLBOARD...CREEPY.

6/11- A Missouri family posted a Christmas photo on their website. They totally did not expect that it would end up as a billboard in a foreign country. A family friend spotted the image on a Czech billboard while on vacation. It was splashed across a huge storefront.
The owner of the store says he thought it was computer-generated and is taking it down.

3. 14-YEAR-OLD HIT BY 30,000 MPH SPACE METEORITE...A MOVIE IS IN THE WORKS.

6/12- A 14-year old German boy, Gerrit Blank, was on his way to school when he saw a "ball of light" heading straight towards him from the sky. A red hot, pea-sized piece of rock then hit his hand before bouncing off and causing a foot wide crater in the ground. The teenager survived the strike, the chances of which are just 1 in a million - but with a nasty three-inch long scar on his hand.

Ansgar Kortem, director of Germany's Walter Hohmann Observatory, said: "Most don't actually make it to ground level because they evaporate in the atmosphere. Of those that do get through, about six out of every seven of them land in water," he added.

The only other known example of a human being surviving a meteor strike happened in Alabama, USA, in November 1954 when a grapefruit-sized fragment crashed through the roof of a house, bounced off furniture and landed on a sleeping woman.

STREET ART: RESOURCES OF THE STREET

1. TRAFFIC BARREL MONSTER
Man created public art with items swiped from construction site.

JUNE 12- A North Carolina man is facing criminal charges for creating an amusing piece of public art from construction barrels. Joseph Carnevale, 21, was nabbed Wednesday after a Raleigh Police Department investigation determined that he was responsible for the work constructed May 31 on a roadway adjacent to North Carolina State University. Carnevale was charged with misdemeanor larceny for allegedly building his orange monster from materials pilfered from a construction site. According to an arrest warrant, Carnevale "destroyed three road blocking barrels by cutting and screwing them together to form a statue." Police estimated that Carnevale's artwork caused $360 in damages to Hamlett Associates, the North Carolina construction company that owned the barrels. Carnevale is scheduled for a July 21 court appearance in Wake County.

2. LOLIPOP METER
A DC-based pranster/artist named Mark Jenkins has unleashed his latest prank upon the world - parking meters-turned-lollipops...I wonder if everyone gets tickets for not putting money in the lollipop meter.

MUZIC: VIDEO OF THE WEEK

PETER BJORN & JOHN- NOTHING TO WORRRY ABOUT

Peter Bjorn and John are a Swedish indie rock band formed in Stockholm in 1999. Although influenced by the sounds of classic '60s baroque pop, power pop, and new wave, the band shunned the "revivalist" tag and, instead, created some of the most exciting and original indie rock of the mid-2000s. The band's third album, Writer's Block (2006), became a minor international hit, best known for the single “Young Folks” which featured Victoria Bergsman formerly of The Concretes.

The song "Nothing To Worry About" is off the band's fourth album, Living Things, released in March 2009.

The video, directed by Andreas and Filip Nilsson, follows the adventures of a dude with a huge pompadour, collection of leather jackets, appetite for booze, and gang of like-minded, fleet-footed greasers…PB&J, the new rockabilly.

THE BLACK LIPS- VENI VIDI VICI
Black Lips is an American garage rock revival band from Atlanta, Georgia. This video is interesting due to the fact that it looks like it was filmed in the 70s...i assume that was the directors intent.

MOVIEZ: MOST RIDICULOUS SCENES EVER!

Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus
A Megalodon shark and a giant octopus were frozen in mid-combat back during the Ice Age. Their Alaskan glacier melts; the two creatures revive; both immediately set about cutting a swath of destruction. The octopus dismembers a Japanese oil rig. The Megalodon goes all "Air Jaws", leaping from the water to bite a 747 out of the sky. The octopus swats planes with its tentacles. The shark chomps the Golden Gate Bridge.

One of the most ridiculous scenes in this movie is when the Mega Shark takes down a plane flying around 15,000 feet in the air.
If I were the guy in the window seat that got to see a Mega Shark coming right at me while I sat in a plane flying 15,000 feet in the air, I would be thinking that this is the coolest way to go out.

WATCH OUT...AIR JAWS!!

RANDOM ARTICLEZ: DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIRST BLACKOUT?

A blackout is fun right? NO! Blackout is a phenomenon caused by the intake of alcohol in which long term memory creation is impaired. Blackouts are frequently described as having effects similar to that of anterograde amnesia. 'Blacking out' is not to be confused with the mutually exclusive act of 'passing out'. Research on alcohol blackouts was begun by E. M. Jellinek in the 1940s. Using data from a survey of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) members, he came to believe that blackouts would be a good predictor of alcoholism. However, there are conflicting views as to whether or not this is true.

Fragmentary and Complete Blackouts
There are 2 types of alcohol induced blackouts – fragmentary and total.
People who have experienced a fragmentary blackout may not recall the events of a period of intoxication until they are reminded or cued about them.

SCENERIO #1:
Friend: "Remember jumping into the pool last night with your clothes on?"
Fragmented blackout dude: "Oh my, I'm starting to remember that now…I can’t believe I did that!"

People who have experienced a total blackout will not remember, even with memory cues, any of the events that occurred during the period of the memory blackout.

SCENRIO #2:
Friend: "Remember jumping into the pool with your clothes on?"
Total blackout dude: "What pool?"
...classic

Blackouts can last for hours or even days where you begin to turn into a blackout zombie drunk. Memory blackouts do not affect memories formed prior to the onset of drunkenness.

BLACKED OUT OR PASSED OUT?

Speaking of blacking out...go see The Hangover, now in theaters everywhere.
That ish is hilarious!
